Yale's Response to the Hamas-Israel War

President Salovey's Statements

Yale President Peter Salovey has issued several statements regarding the Hamas-Israel war. Most recently, on December 7th, 2023, he sent a message to the Yale community titled "Against Intolerance." In this statement, Salovey condemned the violence and called for peace.

In a previous statement, released on May 11th, 2021, Salovey expressed his deep concern about the escalating violence and called for a ceasefire.

University Policy on Freedom of Expression

Yale University has a long-standing policy on freedom of expression. This policy protects the right of all members of the university community to express their views, even if those views are unpopular or controversial.

The university's policy on freedom of expression is based on the belief that open and free debate is essential to the pursuit of knowledge and the advancement of society.

Controversy over Divestment

In 2021, a group of Yale affiliates sent President Salovey a letter calling for the university to divest from military weapons manufacturers.

The letter argued that the university's investments in these companies were inconsistent with its values and that divestment would send a strong message against the violence in Israel and Gaza.

President Salovey responded to the letter by saying that he would not divest from military weapons manufacturers.

Salovey said that he believes that divestment would be ineffective and that it would harm the university's ability to engage with the world.
